1. President Obama is asking for public opinion on where the United States should stand on the crisis in Syria. This is yet another example of genocide. Complete a KWL chart noting what your team knows about genocide, and what your team wants/needs to know about genocide to be able to make an educated response to our president.
(Once you open the KWL chart in Google docs, please make a copy and share it with your team members and teacher before beginning.)
2. You and your group members will divide into expert groups to research similar cases of murders of innocent groups of people around the world. The expert groups will research the Holocaust, Rwanda, and Bosnia. Be sure to take good research notes to share back with your group.
(Once you open the Research Notes page in Google docs, please make a copy and share it with your team members and teacher before beginning.)
3. Once you have completed your research, meet back with your home team to share your findings and record your new learning as your team members share their expertise. As a team, complete a Venn diagram (use Whiteboard iPad app or chart paper) to find similarities and differences among the three past events. Record what your team has learned so far about genocide on the KWL chart.
4. As a whole group, we need to learn about the causes/reasons for the current crisis in Syria.
5. In your original group, using all of your provided resources and your notes, analyze the similarities and differences among the past events and the current crisis in Syria. Brainstorm possible actions/solutions that our country should make in response while considering the pros/cons of each of your ideas.
(Once you open the Actions/Solutions page in Google docs, please make a copy and share it with your teacher before beginning.)
6. You have learned a lot about past and present genocides around the world. Now it's time to give President Obama your educated opinion. Write a letter to President Obama telling him about your concerns and opinions about events in Syria, and how you think our country should respond.
(Once you open the KWL chart in Google docs, please make a copy and share it with your team members and teacher before beginning.)
